A lesson in goal setting from Bill Gates
Dr Mani sent me the link to read this, and suggested I read it in full.
I’m so glad he did – it was well worth the 15 minutes or so it took, and I commend it to you.
It’s Bill Gates’ first Annual report since leaving Microsoft to work full time in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
In the world of self development, we are familiar with the process of setting goals. And we know about making them measurable and of tracking them.
As I read this report, I realised that I was reading a textbook, real-life example of how to set goals.
And I should not have been surprised – remember, this was the man who said, in the days when computers were a big as rooms, that he wanted to put a computer on every desk in every home and office in all the world.
That goal guided everything he did for the next 30 years.
As I read this report, I was inspired by how he is applying that same logical and disciplined thinking to his philanthropy.
At Spiritus we ask our businesses to state their values and then say how they are reflected in their business. And those values will attract like-minded people to them, with the basic “fit” of values making for a more fulfilling business relationship.
I would not presume to know Bill Gates’ values. But reading this report, it is clear that in applying them to his Foundation, he is about to make some very real differences in the areas on which he turns his attention.
