Angela Treat Lyon – Why is it NOT Baggage?
Note from Shelagh: We started this month with Angela talking about how she created the fabulous image which we’ve adopted as the icon of the Spiritual Marketing Manifesto. So I’m especially delighted to have her bring the month nearly to its conclusion with her own unique message about Energy….
Over the past several years, one of the most common things I hear at the beginning of working with people to help them gain more success in their business is: “I can’t stand having all this BAGGAGE! I want to get rid of it so my personal life doesn’t affect me so much, then I can do my business better!”
Well, isn’t it strange that on the one hand, we think of ourselves as good, kind people; we try to love ourselves, be kind to ourselves, take care of ourselves. And yet on the other hand, we judge our own internal workings so harshly!
As kids, we were repeatedly told not to speak up, not to feel, not to stand out, not to express, not to get angry, not to cry…is it any wonder we treat our feelings with such distaste?
It’s a learned response. As such, we can change it.
And best that we do so, because in any business, relationships are of the top-most importance…if we’re harsh on ourselves, how will we be towards our customers? Or towards our employees, joint venture partners, assistants, other entrepreneurs and business owners and fellow board members?
If we are really going to do real ‘spiritual marketing,’ which to me means connecting and aligning with our highest values, not judging others, allowing them to be who they are…then I believe the motion has to start within ourselves, at the very deepest level.
If we lack self-acceptance, accepting others with all their foibles, goofus habits and weird activities isn’t going to be possible. We’ll be pretending, wearing a mask, as part of us hates or criticizes or derides the other in secret, below conscious awareness.
It’s an ongoing exercise, a constant vigilance, to see that we are, indeed, meeting our own expectations. So let us all look for where we judge ourselves and call the wonderful energy in there that only wants to serve us harsh, nasty names.
How can anger or sorrow or terror be ‘wonderful’ energy?
It has been my experience that if I ask internally what this (to me) painful energy wants for me, 99% of the time it says it wants to serve me somehow: it wants to keep me safe, being small and not standing out so I don’t get punished, laughed at, derided, etc. It may not be what I want now, but back when I was smaller and more vulnerable, it was a great survival tactic. Thank you, I say! Thank you for sticking by me for so long even though I fought you tooth and nail.
E = outwards, motion = movement. Emotions are just energy moving outwards.
It’s just energy!
And it’s only painful because I’m resisting it!
So if I’m feeling angry, it’s up to me not to try to squash it and not feel it. I need to allow it to rush through me and not get stuck in me!
It’s up to me to clear the judgments, accept the energy and ask it to please help me be more creative. Get rid of it? I don’t think so! That’s MY energy – why would I want to get rid of it?
That anger, pain, sorrow, guilt, fear, doubt or other distasteful emotion may have been with you for a long time. How about asking it what its job is? How about thanking it for having the perseverance to stick with you all these years as it tried to help?
How about asking it if it would like to have more fun in a more grown up way, now that you understand what it was there for in the first place? Nine times out of ten it says ‘yes’, and is delighted to drop its heavy burden of judgement and its huge bag of pain.
If you feel yourself thinking ‘when will this sh*t stop?’ or ‘I hate feeling like this!’ there’s another opportunity for you to glean some marvelous new energy with which to build your dreams.
If you’re mad, ask what you’d rather have in the place of what you’re mad at.
Instead of losing your temper, temper your thoughts, and ask, ‘what are three small steps I can take to create what I’d really prefer,’ and use the impetus your anger gave you to do those three steps.
So I say to all of us that if we are truly to carry out a real revolution in the world of commerce, we each need to stop judging ourselves so fiercely and being so hard on ourselves, and start coming from a softer place, with kindness, understanding – and even fun. Not be a spineless namby-pamby, nice-nice fool, but more aware, more keen on creating conscious activity.
In the long scheme of things, life is a comedy. I believe that if we can treat our failures and stumblings as just another step along our journey about which we can look back and chuckle and appreciate, how much easier we will be to get along with, and how much more attractive we will be.
And we’ll be much more successful at the relationships we need to build and maintain as part of this new paradigm of rapid global interaction and communication.
And remember – it’s not baggage – it’s energy, and it belongs to you. Love it and invite it to serve you in a new, fun, creative, elevated manner!
